How the ISPS quay in Knarrevik works

An ISPS-approved quay is access-controlled and secured under international rules. It opens the door to cargo traffic, offshore deliveries and industrial operations that ordinary quays cannot handle.

What is ISPS?

The ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code) is an international security framework set by the UN maritime organisation IMO. It sets requirements for access control, fencing, surveillance, procedures and guarding at quays that receive vessels in international traffic.

An ISPS-approved quay has its own security plan, a designated PFSO (Port Facility Security Officer) and is approved by the Norwegian Coastal Administration. That means vessels that require ISPS-compliant ports – for example offshore vessels and international cargo ships – can actually berth.

What does it mean in practice?

  • Access control. Entry and exit happen through a gate with registration. Unauthorised personnel cannot enter the quay area.
  • International calls. The quay can receive vessels that require ISPS status, not just local traffic.
  • Secure storage. Cargo and equipment can be stored in a secured area, which is often required by insurers and counterparties.
  • Documented security. There are logs, procedures and exercises – important documentation in tenders and contracts.
  • Preparedness. Established routines for alerting, evacuation and coordination with the Coastal Administration and police.

The ISPS quay in Knarrevik

The quay at Knarrevik Business Park is ISPS-approved and one of few secured quays in this part of the Bergen region. It is sheltered, has good depth and is set up for industry, offshore-related operations and project cargo.

On the same site you will find commercial premises and the office building with energy rating A, which makes Knarrevik well suited for businesses that want quay, warehouse, workshop and offices in one place.

When the Sotra Connection opens in 2027, the quay will be even better connected to the Bergen region's road network.
